Scribble Slam: Benny Pierce VS Sarge

Scribble Slam is now back once a month at Ric's Backyard on the first Sunday of each month! The live art battle where street artists compete to a 90 minute timer to create an artwork that responds to a theme provided to them at the start of battle.

Shani Finch will be MCing all the minute-to-minute details of the grueling battle between artists Benny Pierce and Sarge and Jai will be DJing during the battle.

Each event showcases two artists battling against each other, working to a 90 minute time limit, and each creating their own artwork on a 2.4m x 2.4m wall.

The two artists involved are able to use whichever medium they like to create an artwork. Both artists will be completely unaware of what they will be painting until the countdown timer is started. The element of the ‘unknown’ lends Scribble Slam a sense of intensity and intrigue that draws a diverse crowd of art aficionados.

Be there for 6pm to ensure you see the battle right from the moment the buzzer goes off!

  • MC Hunter Immortalised

    11052037_825415617540389_3728881705047213214_n

Australia remembered the fallen on ANZAC day last month, and in keeping with this tradition, Australian hip-hop has done the same. Perth local MC Hunter, a fallen swan from the Syllabolix Crew who passed away from cancer in 2011 at the young age of 36, has been immortalised in a scene that has never stopped showing respect to the MC. He was one of the most loved characters in the realm of Australian hip-hop.

Now, as a part of a local arts project, Luke Cornish AKA ELK (@elkstencils) painted a massive mural of Hunter at Perth’s Central TAFE. The freehand painting it took a week in late April and has been widely acknowledged as a fitting tribute to the much beloved MC, Australia wide.

Further work of ELK’s can be found [HERE].

  • Eloquor's 'Invasion' Sparks Australia Day Awareness

    eloquor-charge

Melbourne hip-hop artist, Eloquor has just released the track and video for something very poignant this time of year with the seemingly visceral attack called ‘Invasion’.

As Australia Day descends upon our calendars next week, every year the push of strong consciousness for the real underpinning meaning of this annual day-off-work is getting stronger through the arts. Invasion Day is becoming more the preferred term adopted by those who seek a greater sense of awareness into Australia’s dark and shadowed history of British occupation and colonialism to the death and detriment of the original inhabitants of this same great land that we call home.

The truth of this track is shared with Strike Won, an MC of Indigenous Tasmanian heritage and with powerful visuals accompanying the track by video clip director/producer Carl Allison, Eloquor’s ‘Invasion’ keeps you in mind of the real story of Australia Day.

  • Back Once Again! APRA AMCOS & Hilltop Hoods To Grant $10K For 2015 Unsigned Hype!

    tumblr_n1iutyTHZO1soc68so1_500

Australia’s leading hip-hop crew, The Hilltop Hoods have returned with APRA AMCOS for 2015 to invite all aspiring and unsigned Australian artists of hip-hop and soul to put forth their talents for a chance to win $10,000 to cover expenses from recording to album release, which can include marketing, legal fees as well a Zoo York prize pack to boot.

The HTH Initiative has started the careers for past recipients, Chelsea Jane, Jimblah, RUNFORYOURLIFE and last year’s winner, QLD-based MC I am D who had just released his debut EP The Daley Grind and has since put the $10,000 he won towards producing and promoting his first full-length album.

    When interviewed by APRA AMCOS, I Am D described the moment he found out he had won the grant;

“I got a call from Suffa (Hilltop Hoods) on Friday morning while I was at work loading bags onto a plane and pretty much had to cut the call short. He basically said I had won and I was trying to hold it together like some idiot on the radio winning the day’s jackpot.”

Please make sure you are a member of APRA AMCOS. Visit their website for details. They are taking applications for the process from 20 January, 2015. This is not to be slept on. If you’re serious about your music then this opportunity can be the biggest boost into a career in entertainment for any unsigned hype. Just ask I am D.

  • Does Endless Perspectives – Part 4 Paris

Digital Does Endless Perspectives Paris Paris

A lot of excitement surrounded the trip to Paris as Parisien friends had hinted towards an interesting location for the project: a tunnel and train track next to a hidden gypsy camp. After a long walk through the forest with a pack of canvasses, Does and Stephan Polman stumbled upon this trackside spot in Paris. On the way back while walking through the gypsy garden, Does found a rusty 'get away' van with bullet holes and could not resist the temptation of giving it a layer of paint.

After this extraordinary painting session they went straight to Paris centre, where a few glasses of fine French wine were awaiting them. On the way back they stopped at the square in front of La Basilique Du Sacre Coeur as sunrise was kicking in, the streets were being cleaned and the fresh milk was being delivered: "Il est cinq heures, Paris s'eveille". The icing on the cake was Blankeroy's email with beats and melodies for each of the cities they visited so far.

  • Does Endless Perspectives – Part 3 Basel

Digital Does Endless Perspectives Basel Basel

Third destination was undoubtedly Basel, a five hour drive away from the south of Holland. Does's first visit in 2006 left a deep impression when † Dare gave him a guided tour through the layered tunnel system and the famous Basel line. To this day the Basel line remains an important memorial site and a big drawing card for writers around the world who like to admire the original and sometimes ancient works of other artists from all over the world. Keeping in this atmosphere, Does arranged for a good spot near the trackside to set up and paint his canvasses. Despite Stephan Polman's BBQ food poisoning, who spent a few days in hospital, this trip was incredible.

Paris is up next weekend. Get ready for it!

  • Does Endless Perspectives - Part 2 London

    Does Endless Perspectives London London

After adding some colour to Amsterdam, Does packed his bags and loaded his car with paint and blank canvasses to drive to London. Check-in at the Euro tunnel in Calais went smoothly. Upon exit in the UK there were a few question at customs about all the equipment in the back of the car. While the spray cans raised some eyebrows, Does and cameraman Stephan Polman were able to talk their way out of this and off they went into the streets of London.

Next week the journey continues on to another European city. Until then, we hope you enjoy this second official video for the 'Endless Perspectives' project.
