• REVIEW: Folkus EP by Calski

    Calski, Australian Hip Hop Artist

Folkus is a formidable force, well-driven and delivered by both hands of the MC/DJ and multi-instrumentalist producer talent Calski, beyond a lyrical left-right flurry.

First and foremost, this is a high-powered beat drop, however, Calski chops nice on the mic for those who fix themselves to dare suggest dude ain’t a bar spitter. The veteran MC dating back to Australia’s hip-hop scene of the 2000's, Calski has thrown his all into this EP proving his value in the booth is equal to his value on the boards. Backed by Brisbane’s most potent label Hydrofunk Records, Folkus is ready to be pushed across the line July 19.

Folkus features the fast and furious of the nation’s illest rappers in Hau (Koolism), Briggs, Dialectrix (Down Under Beats Crew), Sinks & Raven and Brisbane’s own I Am D. After his debut LP Love Drive Commission caught fire in 2012 from the Obese stack, and previous EP Eyes & Ears (2014) showed out in full, this latest EP is a return serve and a graduation of sorts for the Brisbane-based talent.

The EP has already dropped a pair of singles with Attention featuring Sinks & Raven, and I Know with one-time Gully Platoon outfit Dialectrix who wields bars of verbiage in defense of the onslaught of beats being thrown his way courtesy of Calski, himself giving off that superhero- versus-villain vibe. Third single and most notable nodder off the EP, Just Clap, will make you do more than the title instructs. A certified dancefloor hit, Just Clap features the one and only Aria awarded hip-hop Icon and host of JJJ Hip Hop Show, Canberran vet Hau who lends his dexterous wordplay over the ambidextrous and formative beat work of Calski’s which has been noted to evoke the soundscape to that of James Brown, Ozomatli and Prince rolled into a blunt and lit.

Calski’s production potency throughout Folkus remains unchallenged, his skills in the booth as an MC are not to be undervalued either, certifying him one of the strongest talents to be vastly acknowledged as a real threat in the scene. If the previous singles released are running heat checks of the EP’s backbone against another strong finish to the financial year of Australian hip-hop drops then this one is set to stand upright and rigid with any releases thus far in 2016.

Along with the Ep dropping, Calski is set to release a limited edition Just Clap/Hand On The Bible 7" vinyl that will be available for purchase this Tuesday along with the Ep.
