Funds Pt. II - Raiza Biza w/ Blaze the Emperor, JessB, Mo Muse & Abdul Kay

Raiza Biza Feat. Blaze The Emperor, JessB, Mo Muse, Abdul Kay and Zee Habibi posse shot

When Raiza Biza dropped his breakout Dream Something mixtape in 2012, the Hamilton-based Rwandan rapper was one of a handful of African hip-hop artists in New Zealand. At the time, he was hyper-aware of how his actions would affect the perception of his community, and the aspirations of the next generation of African New Zealand musicians. On stage and informally, he spoke like a politician, and show by show; he introduced himself to the country with intent, purpose and meaning.

Eight years later, things look pretty different. These days, Raiza is far from alone, as the guest cast of 'Funds Pt. II' undefinably illustrates. 'Funds Pt. II', recorded at Red Bull Studios Auckland, is a posse cut remix of 'Funds' (featuring Blaze The Emperor), an album cut off Raiza's latest project Bygones.

Where 'Funds' was an opportunity for the two Hamilton MCs and producer Habibi Zee to indulge in paranoid, soft-focus introspection around the pursuit of the bag, 'Funds Pt. II' retools that energy into undeniable, all-or-nothing aspiration. This time, they bring new generation African New Zealand MCs JessB, Mo Muse and Abdul Kay along for the ride, and the talent level has given Raiza permission to stop self-censoring and talk that talk.

In 2020, Israel "Stylebender" Adesanya is the UFC Middleweight Champion, JessB is an MTV European Music Award winner, and African New Zealanders are an established part of New Zealand's cultural milieu. Raiza doesn't have to worry about how these communities are perceived anymore, or what their aspirations look like. The movement that was once on the horizon is here, and they've arrived in numbers, as "Funds PT. II'' displays with undeniable style and flair.

Raiza Biza Shares Slick Visuals For ‘City Girl’

Raiza Biza - City Girl ft Embher (Music Video)

    NEW ZEALAND TOUR KICKS OFF

FRIDAY 1 NOVEMBER - NECK OF THE WOODS, AUCKLAND

Ahead of his extensive New Zealand album tour, Raiza Biza shares slick visuals for ‘City Girl’, directed and created by long-time collaborator Connor Pritchard. The uptempo track features the honey-dewed vocal tones of Embher, over a hard-hitting dancefloor pulse.

Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated local releases this year, the Rwandan-kiwi rapper released his new album Bygones on October 4th via Low Key Source. A hypnotic culmination of hundreds of hard drive demos, the nine track record features cameo appearances from Sudanese-American rapper/producer extraordinaire Oddisee, along with AmmoNation collaborators Blaze the Emperor, Embher and producer VULC and more.

Biza’s new material follows a new sound arch, finding inspiration in the deeply written metaphors of the Marvin Gaye-era soul and the heart-hitting rhythms of 1970’s funk. Binding his grounding in socially conscious thought and observational storytelling, Biza studies the human condition and the world around us. Though this time, he admits, the record finds the balance between fun and seriousness. Rather than be ruled by the lyrics, the music plays an emotive part.

He tells the angles of the human condition through high octane moments, the party life, through to the low, self-reflective moments found in tracks like Stolen Youthand Trouble where he teams up with Oddisee and Zenyth. Both tracks have gone onto become student radio network hits, sitting in the top 10 of the Radioscope Alternative Airplay chart in New Zealand for consecutive weeks.

New Zealand Rapper JessB Announces Her First Australian Tour 2018

    JessB New Zealand Female Rapper

New Zealand rapper JessB announces her first Australian tour to launch her highly anticipated debut EP ‘Bloom’. The 7-track EP features her diamond-hard single ‘Set It Off’ as well as the just released, P-Money produced ‘Take It Down’ (Feat. Rubi Du).

Quickly making her mark on New Zealand hip-hop, Jess has already racked up over 450,000K streams, collaborated with award-winning legends SWIDT, and secured the first female appearance on David Dallas’s ’64 Bars’ - a Red Bull backed project whereby MC’s are invited to take the mic and freestyle over a fresh beat. "She came in and handled it first take. She’s got a vibe, and she’s super confident" says Dallas.

JessB has already conquered New Zealand’s biggest festival stages, Rhythm & Vines, Northern Bass and Soundsplash and most recently Auckland City Limits. She was also selected to open Stormzy’s two NZ shows in 2017.

Of Kenyan descent, JessB grew up in Auckland and naturally gravitated towards hip-hop from an early age. Raised by her adoptive parents, hip-hop offered an avenue to explore her identity in a way that felt natural - providing a cultural touchstone as a minority in New Zealand.

After meeting renowned producer P-Money through SoundCloud in 2014, the two began what would go onto be a solid friendship and musical partnership. As well as producing Jess’s debut release ‘Soul Free’, P-Money has become a mentor to Jess as well as playing his hand in producing, mixing and engineering a number of the tracks on the ‘Bloom’ EP.

Speaking about her latest single Take It Down’, JessB describes it as a reflection of writing music that blends the significance of discussing serious issues with the necessity of having a good time with the people you love:

“I am very passionate about my role as a female artist and what I want to be saying in my songs. I think it is super important to have a balance between talking on serious issues that affect myself and other people of colour and women of colour, but I also think it is so important to remember that we also need to have fun with life and our friends who we cherish.”
