DECADE OF THE THUNDAKAT – 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY REGIONAL TOUR

DECADE OF THE THUNDAKAT – 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY REGIONAL TOUR

One of Australia’s most beloved Hip-Hop acts, Sydney via Blue Mountains trio Thundamentals, will celebrate their tenth anniversary in 2018 with an epic national tour - Decade Of The Thundakat.

Announced on Triple J's Breakfast Show after a very special Like A Version, Decade Of The Thundakat will see Tuka, Jeswon and DJ Morgs take their revered live show across thirty-two regional dates nationwide in early 2018.

Ten years deep into their career, Thundamental's reputation is undeniable. From their debut self-titled EP in 2008 through to their acclaimed, ARIA and J Award nominated fourth album Everyone We Knowin 2017, relentless touring across Australia and Europe including support for A Tribe Called Quest, Macklemore and Big Boi, not to mention gracing almost every major music festival in the country along the way, the band hasevolvedmusically, inspired lyrically and become one of Australia's most exciting and powerful live acts. In the last year alone, Thundamentals have graced the stages of Triple J's One Night Stand, Groovin The Moo, Splendour In The Grass and Falls Festival, in addition to selling out their biggest ever headline tour.

Tuka explains "It's 10 years of releasing records and touring, sure, but it's so much more than that. It's family, it's a platform to contribute to our community, it's connection to the broader community at large, it's a wealth of life-changing experiences. To be fair, it's a crazy thing to look back on. To listen back on..."

Following their accolades and commercial success, it's Thundamentals ongoing efforts to spread love and inspire a positive change in their own community that has endeared them to their legions of fans, quietly raising tens of thousands of dollars through their Got Love Initiative on behalf of the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown and the The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.

"Despite us being around for a decade, I feel like we have a lot of great music and creative energy left in us which I look forward to sharing with our listeners in the years to come. Thank you so much to anybody who has ever taken an interest in our music. We wouldn't be here without your continued support" - Jeswon

  • Brendan Tuckerman From Thundamentals Talks About The Groups Recent Success

Thundamentals, Australian Hip Hop, Ozhiphop, Ozhiphopshop, Australian Music

STILL ON THEIR ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM NATIONAL TOUR, THUNDAMENTALS HAVE BEEN SURPRISED BY THEIR EXPANDING POPULARITY. BRENDAN TUCKERMAN EXPLAINS TO RIP NICHOLSON HOW THE OBESE TRIO CHOOSE TO USE THEIR EXPANDING PROFILE.

The tour has grown to a massive 25 dates since it started. Although, considering the Thundamentals’ last album, So We Can Remember, debuted #3 on the Australian album charts and numero uno on the ARIA urban charts, such demand for shows should have come as no surprise to the rap crew from NSW’s Blue Mountains. Yet, “We’ve been blown away, we didn’t expect it,” Brendan Tuckerman aka MC Tuka admits. “When we first released the shows we had 11 venues, then three weeks later we got hit by so many other places that wanted us to play. The Corner sold out three times, the Capital sold out twice, The Zoo sold out twice and the Manning Bar in Sydney sold out twice. It was, like, 1,400 people in Wollongong – it was crazy for us. We’re not used to that. Last time we went to Wollongong there were like 90 people. It was just a beast this tour.”

Despite it often translating into revenue in their back pockets, expanding the fanbase is not how the Thundamentals measure their success. Earlier this year, they were appointed Welcome To Australia ambassadors and designed a ‘Got Love’ band T-shirt with 100% of proceeds going towards supporting asylum seekers. “As long as people understand this is not why we do it,” Tuckerman stresses their focus on using their platform for a higher cause. “We have a particular belief system that we roll with and we try not to preach it. But it’s nice that we’re reaching these new markets to understand the depths of the issue. It’s gotta be more than being crazy pumped for playing shows. We have this social responsibility but more like a social observation that will be recycled back into our music.”

    thundas-all-4-poncho-trout-pout

As Tuckerman prepares for his fourth solo album to be released through EMI mid-year, the irony of Thundas’ involvement in the entertainment industry’s capitalistic machine is not lost on Tuckerman as he explains the balancing act they’re obliged to partake in. “George Clooney was putting his hand up to help the world at the same time he was making these blockbuster films and obviously leaning on a lot of third-party, capitalistic corporations. And, being in the entertainment industry you can’t but be a victim of circumstance to make money. Like, the clothes we wear are made in China for a start. There’s a duality going on here and we see it as just a balance. If we’re going to benefit from this energy that’s fucking the world over, then we’re just trying to find a happy medium on the other end. We’re stoked that people want to come out and support us. It’s a lot of fun, especially those big stages where you do get access to a crazy amount of people who have probably never heard us, because you’re sharing with other artists’ fan bases.”

  • Tour News - Thundamentals So We Can Remeber Tour 2014

Thundamentals - So We Can Remeber Tour 2014

Thundamentals So We Can Remember Tour Thundamentals So We Can Remember Tour Flyer 2014

Just months after romantic first single ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ romped to success, spawning sold-out headline gigs in every town on the tour, and proving a crowd favourite at Thundamentals’ 2013 festival appearances —Sprung Festival, Southbound and Falls Festival — the Sydney trio are back in full force. Having just announced, in a triple j exclusive, a massive run of dates to celebrate the [seriously] long-awaited release of third album So We Can Remember, out Fri 2 May through Obese Records, Thundamentals present second single ‘Something I Said [ft. Thom Crawford]’ to stave off some of the anticipation.

Safe to say So We Can Remember will be lovingly welcomed by the trio’s fans — ‘Thundakats’ — who have been waiting patiently since 2011 for a follow up to the group’s second record Foreverlution; a release that saw Thundamentals’ first entries in both the ARIA and the AIR Charts: #19 on ARIA Australian Charts, #17 on ARIA Urban Charts and #3 on the AIR Charts.

Fans came out in force for So We Can Remember lead single ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’, creating a #5 debut on the iTunes Hip Hop Charts, and voting the love song into position #32 in triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown – the highest position gained by a local hip hop song for the entire year and Thundamentals’ second appearance in the nationally-celebrated radio event. The accompanying Tarantino-esque film clip did alright for itself too, clocking up nearly 385,000 views on YouTube, grabbing both Channel V and Rage TV’s ‘Clip Of The Week’ upon release with viewers of the latter getting ‘Smiles…’ to #44 on the publicly voted Rage TV ‘Best Clips Of 2013’[the only local hip hop track to make the cut], along with a nomination for the ‘Best Music Video’ at the triple j awards, and two wins for Best Hip-Hip Music Video Australia 2013 and Best Independent Music Video NSW 2013 in The Australian Independent Music Video Awards 2013.

The much-loved Blue Mountains via Newtown hip hop trio now, with second single ‘Something I Said [ft. Thom Crawford]’, flick fans another curve ball continuing their tendency to parallel light and dark in their compositions: while MCs Tuka and Jeswon lyrically level rolled eyes at childish gossips, DJ Morgs drops in the ruckus of kids’ playgrounds to drive it home, layering old school beats with a triumphant horn section, handclaps and cute, bouncing, piano to underscore Oscar nominee Thom Crawford’s lamenting, soulful vocal in a song destined to be a crowd favourite on the album tour.

Getting across as much of the country as possible, Thundamentals are touring So We Can Remember as part of the national, regional Groovin The Moo festival juggernaut, as well as playing their own major city launches. For a band who’s past shows have included supports for A Tribe Called Quest, Big Boi [Outkast], MF Doom, Lyrics Born, Drapht, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Thundamentals are one of Australia’s most accomplished and energetic live acts.
